Why The 5G Rollout Has Been So Slow In The US

Even though it seems like everyone is talking about 5G across the United States, the rollout of the service has been a bit slower than planned. Many associate faster speeds with 5G services, which is why so many people are excited about seeing it available. There have been talks for about three years now of how fast 5G is and the benefits that it can offer consumers. Most major companies like Charter Spectrum that offer internet services claim that they have been able to provide 5G. However, the 5G service that companies claim that they provide isn’t all that different from the 4G LTE. Consumers might not see a difference in internet speeds that are associated with 5G until later in the year or sometime next year.

Timing

Close to two-thirds of consumers in the country might see 5G in November or December of 2021 while the remainder of consumers likely won’t see an improvement until 2022 or even 2023. Consumers should keep in mind that 5G services are better than 4G and that it will be worth the wait when they see how fast they can access the internet and perform various tasks like searching through social media, watching videos, and playing games. It could take over two years for some of the larger companies to get over half of their customers connected to 5G. This is a significant length of time compared to when 5G was launched for mobile devices in 2019. When 4G was launched in 2010, it only took about 18 months for most consumers to have access to faster services.

Why So Slow?

There are a few different reasons as to why it’s been so slow for 5G to spread across the country. The infrastructure is one of the main reasons. There is a lack of space for the equipment needed to deliver 5G, especially in rural areas. Even if the basic structure is there, companies need other pieces of equipment that sometimes aren’t available or that can’t be connected to the main source right away. Companies that purchase equipment from other countries have seen a slow rollout because of the pandemic, which has resulted in a delay in placing equipment where it’s needed.

Apps

When 4G was launched, there were several apps that were launched as well that focused on 4G services. There is a lack of new apps that are associated with 5G, which has decreased the desire for consumers to want to upgrade their plans or to even bother with anything other than the 4G that they already have. Some larger companies are putting together apps that can reach more people so that they can see that 5G is beneficial, but the process is rather slow.

Companies At Play

Over 200 million customers who have Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T have access to 5G. The coverage is associated with a low-band speed, which means that some customers who live in rural areas might not have the same access as others. These companies are looking into mid-band spectrums in order to deliver 5G services to more customers. However, mid-band coverage is what government agencies use, which could pose a problem with companies like Verizon and AT&T. They won’t be able to tap into the spectrum internet needed in order to provide 5G for customers until there’s a larger network available.
